Fireballer Justin Long Signs with the Phillies (July
1, 2009) Justin
Long, 6-2/220# right hander for the 2008 Tradewater Pirates was
drafted in the 2009 MLB first year player draft. The
Philadelphia Phillies took him in the 24th round and 727th
overall.
Long,
a Sun City, KS native and player at Bellevue University, put up
impressive stats last season while helping the Pirates to their
first KIT League championship. During his stay, he faced 282
batters, gave up 53 hits only one of which was a home run, and
finished with a 1.4 ERA. The radar gun put his fast ball
consistently in the 92-95 range and his curve ball was one of the
nastiest seen around this area in a long time. Long received
several looks by the MLB scouts while with the Pirates but
returned to Bellevue where he had another great season on the
mound.
After
signing with the Phillies, he was immediately sent to the
Williamsport Crosscutters, a Class A affiliate of the Phillies
where he was tested within days of his arrival. As of this
printing, Justin has pitched 6-1/3 innings in five games, has
three saves to his credit, has 10 strikeouts, and has allowed 6
hits, and currently carries a 0.0 ERA. It was a genuine
pleasure to have Justin spend time at Riverside Park and we extend
our most sincere wishes for a great career in Justin’s future.
Current
Railroader Tim Dunn picked by Reds. (June
12, 2009) The 2009 Railroaders congratulate their
current team member Tim Dunn for his selection in the MLB draft.
The Cincinnati Reds picked the right-hander Dunn, the TranSouth
Player of the Year, in the 46th round. Dunn was 12-0 with a 1.81
earned run average and earned NAIA All-America honors as a
Trevecca Nazarene junior this spring. Tim’s current record
with the 2009 Railroaders is 2-1 with a win against the Sikeston
Bulls on the day of his MLB selection. Fulton and the
Railroader Fans express their utmost best for Tim and his
accomplishments.
Detroit
Tigers draft Wade Gaynor in 3rd round. (June
10, 2009) Former Pirate slugger and outfielder
Wade Gaynor was selected 89th overall in Tuesday's Major League
Baseball draft. Gaynor, a Hancock County native and
outfielder for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, played for the
Pirates during the 2006 season where he put up some very
impressive stats, both offensively and defensively. From the
Pirates' perspective, this opportunity could not have been
provided to a better individual. Wade is a first class
individual who exhibits the very best in the traits of character,
integrity, and professionalism, all traits that we look for in
Pirate players. Best wishes and good luck to Wade from the
entire Pirate organization.
Former
Oiler Tyler Blandford drafted. (June
10, 2009) Tyler Blandford former Daviess County,
Ky. High, Owensboro Oiler pitcher of 2007, and current
junior at Oklahoma State, has been drafted as the 143rd
overall pick in the MLB draft. The Owensboro Oilers would like to
congratulate Tyler and his family on this very special
achievement. We look forward to following Tyler's career and
wish him much success in the future both on and off the
baseball field. Well done young man!
Astros
draft J. B. McDonald (July
9, 2009) J.B. McDonald, a starter on the 2007 KIT
League Championship team, who finished with an 8-2 mark and a
2.62 E.R.A in the KIT League; as well as striking out three
batters in a row in the All-Star game with the CICL, has been
drafted in the 18th round by the Houston Astros. McDonald,
an outstanding pitcher for Boston College is currently playing
with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League.
